Ideal Self Discovery
Human psychology defines the self-concept as the image we have of our character, nature or identity. This concept answers the fundamental question of ‘who am I,’ and covers a range of aspects that include behavior, social traits and emotional qualities. The concept is based partially in reality, partially in our awareness of how others see us and partially our own interpretation of our behaviors and standards. This means as individuals then, we are most motivated when we have a clear understanding of ourselves, a sense of purpose in life and are able to articulate a personal vision.
The ideal self, grounded in this vision, is a measuring stick. In fact, we believe it is the only measure that really matters. Abstract notions such as social norms and external rubrics of excellence, success and happiness are arbitrary. And while they are important and may influence elements of our ideal construct, they are not sufficient to override our intrinsic motivations that lead us to authentic behavior.
It is this ideal self then that defines for us a goal state, against which we are able to evaluate all aspects of our lives, to include occupation choice, orientation to wealth and material possessions, and investment in interpersonal relationships.
This ideal further plays a crucial role in our emotional reasoning under stress. . . rather than reacting to our rote emotional state, a strong ideal allows us to consider and prioritize behavior choice in the moment. Foundational to being able to adjust our behavior in the moment is a high emotional intelligence competency. Where we are able to recognize our emotions and those of others, and then manage our behaviors in light of those inputs.
